Tunnels

From time to time, we hear of certain stories, but we have no idea if they are fact or fiction. We have documented evidence of the air-raid trenches, but we have also heard rumours of tunnels running under various school buildings. Day girls seem not to know much about them, but many boarders have spoken of them.

The Missing Honours Pockets

The 1926 Sports Committee decided that special distinction should be given to outstanding players in Tennis and Net Ball (their spelling). It took the form of a laurel wreath, placed around the date of the year for which the girl won it. This was in addition to the half and full pockets awarded. The first was awarded in 1926.

Gradually other sports were added to this list and those girls who had attained a high level of competence, achieved individual places in events in Swimming and/or Athletics (amongst other things) and participated in the sport for a minimum of two years could be nominated for an Honours pocket. The worthy recipients were always announced in The Link.

The last mention of an Honours pocket for sport was made in the 1947 Link. And then it is never mentioned again. However, honours pockets continued to be awarded but in the various Links, they are simply recorded as full pockets.

If you were the recipient of an Honours pocket for any sport in the years from 1948, I would love to hear from you as I am compiling a list of award winners.
